In a gentle way, you can shake the world. -Gandhi January 31st, 2008

Gandhi

This double-exposed photo was taken with a Windsor Camera (Diana Clone). It captures a statue of Gandhi and also the branches of a gnarly old tree. The statue of Gandhi is in front of the Indian Embassy, close to Dupont Circle, on a triangle plot of land bordered by 21st St, Q St, and Massachuesetts Avenue in Northwest DC.

bigger…faster….stronger….built to hurt January 30th, 2008

Orange Glove

We hard hit
just like Camacho and Vargas
Who’s the target
now watch how we close the market
We both hard hit,
just like Hagler and Hearns
Add the math be concerned
if its beef you burn
It’s sorta like Cartier and Bill Cosby
Lets do it again
a beautiful blend
lets do it to win…

…so when I can’t think of anything clever to write about I default to tying a picture to some hip hop lyrics.  Looks like I had writers block again.  Also, I have no idea what a premier French jeweler/watchmaker has to do with a guy who advertises for J-E-L-L-O.

Neon Storefront January 29th, 2008

Adams Morgan Storefront

All kinds of vices are for sale at this store on 18th Street in Adams Morgan… Cigarettes. Knives. Adult Videos. Sweets. Sodas. It looks like they offer plenty of varieties of hookahs, too. I’ve never actually been inside this place, nor have I stepped inside the plethora of other “general merchandise” stores around this area. But I am always curious how they stay in business.

The most interesting thing about 18th Street is the dichotemy of daytime vs nightime. Before I moved into DC, I only ever experienced this street under the influences of evening– the heat, the neon, bodies crowding the sidewalks-heels stepping everywhere, the beer, jumbo pizza slices, cars cruising slooowly by you.

Going for a run down this street in the AM hours gave a far different impression: much colder, less glow, empty. A few store owners pushing broomfuls of brown water into the streets. It’s only then that I noticed some of the stores, and not only the watering holes. There’s a hardware shop here? I think I prefer to keep my runs in Rock Creek Park. It feels less awkward.

…so, I turned the State of the Union address just in time to hear Bush do the “God Bless America” thing and have him be received by roaring ovations.  Better luck next time I guess.  Now for the pundits.

Gallery grand opening January 24th, 2008

Jill in Iceland

Guess what? this photo is not taken in DC… Say what?! …Crazy. i know

…it was taken last August on the south shore of Iceland. I’m posting it as the once-ina-lifetime official grand-opening-celebration-initiation of the *drumroll* Gallery section of juxtaexposed.com. So check it out. The link is in the top bar, or lazies can just click the photo without moving your mouse that far away.

*cuts ribbon*

When I get a bit more ambitious the Gallery is going to have this awesome map feature, etc. etc. But now it’s late and i’m fadin’ fast.

oooh! i’ll add a caption: This is my lil’ sister next to a huge rock formation on a black sand beach. I enjoy the scale and her pose and that she is the only touch of color on a mostly B+W backdrop..

Cathedral Night

So, I made Lori climb over the fence on our roof deck to keep me company while I played around with long exposures, traffic lighting, and zoom in the cold.  It was fun….until I couldn’t feel my hands any more.

Also, a big congrats to all of the photographers selected for the 2008 DCist Exposed photography show.  Unfortunatly, I didn’t make the cut this year but seeing the quality of the photos that were selected I can’t be too disappointed.  I am very much looking forward to seeing the exhibit and will try again next year!

I was fortunate enough to have one of my pictures from Bohemian Caverns featured on the “Go Home Already”portion of DCist today so that is always exciting to see.

Talkin’ All That Jazz… January 22nd, 2008

talkin’ all that jazz

TALKIN’ ALL THAT JAZZ

 Well here’s how it started
Heard you on the radio
Talkin’ ’bout rap
Sayin’ all that crap about how we sample
Given examples
Think we’ll let you get away with that?
You criticize our method of how we make records
you said it wasn’t art, so now we’re gonna rip you apart
Stop, check it out my man
This is the music of a hip-hop band
Jazz, well you can call it that
But this jazz retains a new format
Point, where you misjudged us
Speculated, created a fuss
You’ve made the same mistake politicians have
Talkin’ all that jazz

Talk, well I heard talk is cheap
But like beauty, talk is just skin deep
And when you lie and you talk a lot
People tell you to step off a lot
You see, you misunderstood
A sample is a tactic
A portion of my method, a tool
In fact it’s only of importance when I make it a priority
And what we sample of, is the majority
But you are a minority, in terms of thought
Narrow minded and poorly taught
About hip-hop, playin’ all the silly games
You erase my music, so no one can use it
Step on us and we’ll step on you
Can’t have your cake and eat it too
Talkin’ all that jazz

Lies, that’s when you hide the truth
It’s when you talk more jazz than proof
And when you lie and address something you don’t know
It’s so whack that it’s bound to show
When you lie about me and the band we get angry
We’ll bite our pen, start writin’ again
And the things we write are always true
Suckers, get a grip, now we talkin’ ’bout you
Seems to me that you have a problem
So we can see what we can do to solve them
Think rap is a fad? you must be mad
‘Cause we’re so bad we get respect you never had
Tell the truth, James Brown was old
‘Til Eric and Rakim came out with “I Got Soul”
Rap brings back old R&B
And if we would not, people could’ve forgot
We wanna make this perfectly clear
We’re talented and strong and have no fear
Of those who choose to judge but lack pizazz
Talkin’ all that jazz

Now we’re not tryin’ to be a boss to you
We just wanna get across to you
That if you’re talkin’ jazz, the situation is a no-win
You might even get hurt, my friend
Stetsasonic, the hip-hop band
Like Sly and the Family Stone, we will stand
Up for the music we live and play
And for the song we sing today
For now, let us set the record straight
And later on we’ll have an informal and a formal debate
But it’s important you remember, though
What you reap is what you sew
Talkin’ all that jazz

Talkin’ all that jazz
Talkin’ all that jazz

Thinking Spring and “Bustin’ a sag” January 21st, 2008

2008_01_21_nationals.jpg

(note: This post is going to be two-fold and completely unrelated between 1 and 2.) First, I was trying to find an older picture to post today, and I started off by thinking that it has been COLD in DC for the past few days, probably an average of 15 degrees (thats -9.444444 repeating degrees Celcius.)

Cold weather thoughts made me think about spring being around the corner, and so an old picture of the new Nationals Stadium under construction is today’s posting. It was taken nearly 6 months ago, so construction is much farther along by now. That link has a live webcam of the progress. It is slated to open in time for next season! Go Nats!

The 2 fold of the post has to do with a new term I learned from Matt today. I came home from the gym with my adidas pants hiked down a bit because they are already a little short for me, and I was trying to avoid freezing cold (see above) ankles. The conversation went like this:

matt: why are you bustin’ a sag?
me: *confusion* (no response, pause) Excuse me?
matt: why are you bustin’ a sag?
me: I do not understand this term.

Matt proceeds to Google the phrase in order to explain it’s meaning. The best explanation is a picture found here… Can’t say I’d ever heard that before.

Nothing spells awesome like UF! January 19th, 2008

UF

On the way back from a very nice brunch with the parents at Urbana we came across a big white contractor’s style pickup truck. This gentleman found a great way to express his road rage with fellow drivers. He is working of the “ECNALUBMA” concept of writing the message you would like to send to drivers in front of you in reverse so it is clear as day in their review view mirror.

This guy had a very large, very black “UF” written as a page on his notebook. I really, really hope that the entire notebook is filled with select phrases that he wishes to share with drivers who are less than courteous. It looks like he might have multiple tabs for the various situations. The possibilities are endless but you would need to keep it fairly brief and to the point so that the full impact of it would be realized by the offending party. I’m thinking that a similar book may be making its way to my car (to help Lori with her road rage, I don’t need it so much on the metro). I have a few in mind that I’d like to include in my notebook of frustration:

-”EID”

-”KCUS UOY”

-”SRUOY PU”

-”UOY SETAH DOG”

Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

Undisputed January 19th, 2008

World’s Best Fried Chicken

Last night I dragged Lori to the Pikesville National Guard Armory for a night at the fights. Overall, it was a pretty underwhelming show with very little drama in any of the matches. Gary “Digital” Williams from boxingalongthebeltway.blogspot.com has a good write-up on the fights here. We went up to support the owner of my gym, Laurence Jones, who was fighting in his 4th professional bout. Laurence fought hard but he was fortunate to leave the ring with a majority draw.

The highlight of the evening (aside from the sweet neon fried chicken marquee sign, shown above) was getting to meet 5 time World Champion Vinny Paz. This is a guy who after winning his first world title (IBF Lightweight) was in a brutal car crash that broke his neck; he was told he would never fight again. Vinny, against his doctor’s recommendation, came back to win 4 more world titles. Bad ass.

Click CLACK!! January 16th, 2008

chinatown double exposure - clack, originally uploaded by m hoek.

-

The lovely foks at DCist are having the 2nd Annual DCist Exposed Photography show on March 7th at Civilian Art Projects.

-

The photo above is one of the 3 that I submitted in hopes of getting selected to show at the exhibit. This shot is taken from an old Agfa Clack camera.  The Clack is a ‘vintage’ camera that was made at the Agfa Camera-Werk AG in Munich some time in the 1950’s or early 60’s. It is a funny little rudimentary camera that shoots 6×9 medium format shots (unfortunatly, 8 shots to a roll is not terribly economical). Honestly, the “Clack” name is pretty money and I bought it for the novelty of the name but it has turned out to be a camera that is really enjoyable to shoot with. There is a “Click” version out there but I haven’t been able to put my hands on it just yet.

-

This shot is a double exposure of the Chinatown Gateway Arch on H St. NW.  My favorite parts of the shot are how the crosswalk that cuts diagonally across the rhythm of the windows, the metro pylon that is nestled in the corner of the shot, and the areas near the top of the shot where the terracotta roofs overlapped.   I’m very happy with this shot, I think it captures the hectic energy that is around the Verizon Center/Chinatown on a busy night.

-

I also submitted a shot from the Ellipse at Dumbarton Oaks that was also taken with the Clack.  The third shot I submitted is a Holga night shot from the corner of 7th and F St.  I made the decision to go with the medium format theme for my submissions this year, hopefully it pans out.

-

We attended last year and it was really impressive to see just how much photographic talent DC has.  So….wish me luck and I’d encourage everyone to attend and support the local photogs!

Tiki the Attack Dog January 15th, 2008

Tiki Dog

Matt took this photo of his sister’s dog, Tiki, using an Oktomat Lomo camera. It takes 8 successive shots over a period of about 2 seconds. I’m actually surprised that there is even a part of Tiki in every frame knowing how rambunctious of a dog she is.

Light at the End of the Tunnel…err the Sides of the Tunnel January 14th, 2008

Metro Escalator

So apparently there was a Pantless Metro Ride in DC over the weekend (!) leaving from Dupont Circle, and involving approx. 100 people in their undies. hehehe. :) We weren’t there to capture this event in all it’s glory, but some people got some good shots. It looks as if no one got arrested. Thank goodness for those people with too much time on their hands (and not enough modesty/decency/ettiquette).

9:30 Club: Silver Beats January 12th, 2008

Silver Beats at 9:30 Club

I first heard about the Silver Beats on Elliott in the Morning on DC101. So, I decided that a trip to the 9:30 Club was necessary to see what this Japanese Beatles cover band was all about, because I just couldn’t picture it.

On stage, between songs, they introduced themselves as Japanese versions their respective Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They each wore tight suits and had long hair, and as for the vocals, I think they were dead on with the Beatles. The show was enjoyable, a novelty more than anything really, and it got better as the crowd got more into it by singing along. Twist and Shout was probably the highlight when everyone started dancing around. If you ever have the chance to see this band, don’t miss it!

Cold, Wet DC Winter: BOSSA Project January 11th, 2008

Bossa Project

BOSSA Project on 18th St in Adams Morgan was a good cure for the seasonal depression that could have occured on a cold, wet, foggy night in January. If you can figure out how to get through the heavy tangle of curtains on the way in, you’ll find a cozy sofa area with lots of pillows to relax upon. And also plenty of candlelit tables. Bow. chica. bow. wow. We ate Caprese and Fried Calamari–pretty standard– and waited for the 4-piece jazz band to start playing. Overall experience = 7 stars. Potential of a full 10 stars on a more crowded night, and maybe the food will be more exciting if we venture off the appetizzzzzzer list. The rest of the photo set…

ooooo! I almost forgot. The owner of the bar played guitar for the band. And so that was cool.

Graffitti

I like this Graffiti man with one boxing glove. His necktie is tied very nicely. And he just got back from Disneyland. That’s about as good as it gets. On the other hand (which he is lacking), his boxing arm looks a little wimpy. And he has no legs!

He is on the side of a building somewhere around 14th and U Streets in DC, but I can’t remember the exact location.

Hooray Global Warming! January 8th, 2008

S Lights

Now, I know Mr. Gore has good points and his so called “scientific evidence” points to some pretty troubling things in the future, but come on, how nice is 70 degrees in the middle of January?? I’m sure his tree-hugging heart was broken when he checked out the weather report from his mega-mansion and saw that it was going to be a genuinely beautiful day. I know for me it made my early morning stroll across the bridge a whole heck of a lot more pleasant, so what if a couple more polar bears need to learn how to swim? Swimming is good exercise anyway– it’ll help burn off all that extra insulation they won’t be needing with the raising temperatures. Lazy polar bears.

I am of course kidding. I’m a LEED Accredited Professional for chrissake! The USGBC would have my ass for thinking any of that. Cars are the very incarnation of Beelzebub himself! Everyone should take mass transit….or better yet run or bike to work. That way you can have no carbon footprint at all and with this unseasonable weather that actually sounds like a viable alternative.

Weather.com has us back down to freezing within the week, so I guess the Earth will cool off a bit. No doubt thanks to Al. My hats off to you, Mr. Gore!!

Also, just in case you have been living under a rock today: Joe Gibbs has retired (again).

Veni Vidi VIVI January 7th, 2008

2008_01_07_veni_vidi_vivi_2

So, a while back I picked up a little 35mm toy camera off ebay called the Vivitar Ultra Wide and Thin. The Vivi is a tiny little silver plastic thing that has a very wide lens and is apparently very prone to breaking after a few uses. However, while it is still alive it takes some pretty awesome photos, particularly when shot directly into the sun (usually a photography faux pas). So, take a look and be sure to tell me how much you enjoy the results of my new toy. Other general comments of praise and admiration will also be accepted.

_

The picture above is looking west on Fairmont St. NW right near the Cummins abode.

I hope I can get a few more rolls out of this guy.

I Got My Drink and My Redskins January 6th, 2008

Redskins

Redskins in the Playoffs! Nothing else do to but watch the game on the big screen at Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse. Surrounded by lots of excited, intoxicated, screaming Skins fans, it was a cool venue for the big game. We were lucky enough to get a group of seats together, without too many Seahawks fans around us.In a pre-game interview with Sellers 8-year old daughter, she predicted that the Redskins were going to win it 100-0.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and the first-round loss meant that we don’t get to take on the Cowboys again next week. Until next season, we will be rebuilding and keeping the memory of #21 Sean Taylor alive. Waiting for Campbell’s knee to heal. Wondering if Gibbs will return for another season. And waiting for Eastern Motors commercials to come on tv.

Bento Box Dinner #1 and Bento Box Dinner #2: on Friday night we tried out Fusion’s Alley on Connecticutt Ave. in Woodley Park. Overall rating = 5 out of 10. Food was decent, as was the service. Atmosphere and decor were a little uninspiring. Definitely not the best Bento Box I’ve ever had. Seems like it would be a better lunchtime stop.

I Heart Plywood January 4th, 2008

I heart plywood

I’d just like to say that I Heart Plywood. Not so much in an “I Love Lamp” sort of way, because that would just be weird. It’s more of an appreciation for the forms that modern plywood molding techniques allow. I’m thinking this probably goes back to my skateboarding days when you would spend time inspecting the uniques curves and contours of the board, only to then take it outside and beat it into oblivion. The photo above (series here) is of a pretty sweet “overlap” table designed by Eric Pfeiffer that I got for Christmas (and am actually using as I write this). Bent plywood furniture has been around for some time though, the Eames were some of the first designers to fully utilize the plywood molding techniques that were available to them in the 1940’s-60’s and began to push the envelope creating iconic designs that are still popular today. They even managed to create a very nice plywood elephant. Furniture designers all around the world continue to push this medium creating striking forms with more and more innovative uses.I tell you what though, the folks at SKURNITURE (Skateboard+Furniture=Skurniture) really got it right.
