Neon Storefront

All kinds of vices are for sale at this store on 18th Street in Adams Morgan… Cigarettes. Knives. Adult Videos. Sweets. Sodas. It looks like they offer plenty of varieties of hookahs, too. I’ve never actually been inside this place, nor have I stepped inside the plethora of other “general merchandise” stores around this area. But I am always curious how they stay in business.
The most interesting thing about 18th Street is the dichotemy of daytime vs nightime. Before I moved into DC, I only ever experienced this street under the influences of evening– the heat, the neon, bodies crowding the sidewalks-heels stepping everywhere, the beer, jumbo pizza slices, cars cruising slooowly by you.
Going for a run down this street in the AM hours gave a far different impression: much colder, less glow, empty. A few store owners pushing broomfuls of brown water into the streets. It’s only then that I noticed some of the stores, and not only the watering holes. There’s a hardware shop here? I think I prefer to keep my runs in Rock Creek Park. It feels less awkward.
