extra! extra! read all about it! April 29th, 2008

express

Get out your big red sharpies and mark the calander, JuxtaExposed.com made it’s first appearance in a major newspaper today. I am of course talking about none other than Washington DC’s own Express, the free daily newspaper paper that brings joy to the hearts of many a weary commuter morning after morning.

My pondering of the cultural insensitivies of Sumo fat suit wrestling made it into the “Blog Log” in Tuesday morning’s publication (thank you Jenn for the heads up). My ultra-scientic calculations lead me to believe that because this was so far near the back of the paper (page 32 of 35) that only commuters with a 35 min+ Metro ride would have gotten far enough into the paper to get to the Blog Log. However, with over 700,000 riders on the Metro everyday that has to mean that at least a couple thousand people got far enough (or started reading at the back perhaps) to see the JuxtaExposed reference. That is pretty cool.

Here is a photo I snapped of the Blog Log…because I’m a dork.

The U.S Navy Memorial = end point of the Nation’s Triathlon April 29th, 2008

Navy Memorial

We both registered for the Nation’s Triathlon, this coming after weeks of internal debate about my ability to start swimming again, commitment to biking to work, and willingness to jump into the Anacostia River come September 14th, the day of the race. Ugh.

In the interest of thinking positively, I’ve posted an old photo I took of the U.S Navy Memorial, which, incidentally, is where the Olympic distance triathlon concludes. That’s .9 miles of swimming, 24 miles on bike, and 6.2 miles of running. Though in my case it may be better described as flailing through the water, pedaling around praying for no flat tires, and light jogging. Though Ron Burgundy said it best : “I believe it’s jogging or yogging. It might be a soft j. I’m not sure but apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It’s supposed to be wild.”

So come September 14th, I am going to be very, very happy to arrive at the U.S Navy Memorial.

sumo! April 28th, 2008

sumo!

Does anyone else think little kids in giant sumo suits trying knock each other over or out of the ring is hilarious? This was another of the festivities as Maryland Day over the weekend in College Park. I gotta wonder if this is offensive to Japanese culture where Sumo has a rich, ancient, and noble tradition? It does sort of seem like it might be. I know as a person of Dutch descent I can’t stand to see wooden shoe and tulip parodies.

Dupont Circle Metro April 25th, 2008

Dupont Circle Metro

As mentioned in a previous post, Matt is soon participating in Artomatic. The above photo is a little sneak peek-a-roo of just one of the 40-some photos that will be on his display wall for all the world to gander. If the creepy-looking Dupont Circle metro escalator doesn’t make you salivate for more, then something must be wrong with your eye sockets or salivatory glands.

empanar : to wrap or coat in bread April 24th, 2008

Empanadas

Julia’s Empanadas is not a DC foodie secret — I think everyone has been there at least once, whether it was stumbling in after a night at the bars, or just for a quick cheap lunch. Read the reviews and it’s hard to find a bad word about the place. There’s a whole display case of freshly-made empanadas to choose from. Little balls of dough holding all sorts of deliciousness - Matt likes the Chilean Beef ones, and the veggie ones are scrumptious too. And then there is a whole dessert empanada sector that I haven’t even tried approaching - yet.

Funny story. Or maybe you had to be there, I can’t tell. Friend of ours walked in there with us somewhat late one night, he looked at the (already sealed-up) empanada pouches and ordered one, but “hold the onions.” The guy behind the counter, who had a tattoo on his forehead, shook his head. It’s not a made-to-order place. You get what you get. And you will love it!

Also pictured on the left, The Angry Inch, a notoriously obnoxious and overcrowded bar with a smelly upstairs and usually bad DJ.

nap time

Just lovely weather today Washington. Temperatures topped out in the mid-seventies with no precipitation and moderate humidity. It was certainly perfect day to do pretty much anything outside…..including play dead on the Ellipse in front of the White House.

This can only mean that the sweat-the-moment-you-step-outside humidity is right around the corner. So excited!

earthday April 22nd, 2008

Earth Day 2008

Happy Earth Day from Washington, DC! People across the globe (and especially my good friend Lazyeye who embraces every day as if it were Earth Day) are celebrating by doing something good for the planet. Need some ideas? — this earthday network is a good place to look.

So here is my resolution #1: stop using plastic bags from the stores! Instead, I will promise to just put things that I buy straight in my monster-size purses, if I happen to be carrying one, or I will plan ahead by bringing a reusable canvas bag. I have actually been somewhat good about doing this already at the grocery, but I need to start doing it everywhere. Especially because its great to watch Matt help me carry any type of non-plastic, semi-feminine looking bag. The term “Man-handling” comes immediately to mind. When it is blue and tan and says “Delaware Marathon” on the side of it, lets be honest, it’s not quite a murse (man-purse) but the “Delaware” association is bad enough.

Resolution #2: Ride my bike to work twice a month. I’d like to work up to more than that, but I also hate setting unrealistic goals. So I will leave it at that.

Spontaneous Resolution #3: Stop making fun of Delaware, especially on Earth Day! A lot of great things have come out of that state such as the Del. Mem. Br., Fischer’s popcorn, Dover Downs, tax free shopping, the first John Deere tractor, and of course Matt himself!

windy city! April 21st, 2008

marina city

Long weekend trip took us out to the Windy City! (hence the posting delay/gap)

Above are the iconic Marina City towers, at their time these towers were both the tallest residential buildings and tallest reinforced concrete structures in the world. Topping out at 60 stories, these towers have since been relieved of these distinctions. Designed by Bertrand Goldberg in 1959, Marina City was the first high-rise mixed-use urban structure built in the United States after WWII. It has been credited as being a major player in the rebirth of the American inner city… which is pretty awesome.

mmm yum yum falafel April 16th, 2008

Old City Cafe

Old City Cafe is the bomb-diggity. They serve yummy falafel sandwiches and the best part is loading it up at their scoop-it-yourself toppin’ bar. I’m not exactly sure what all the fixings are, but there are a lot of them to choose from. Tzatziki, tomato salsas, sour cream, spicy green stuff, other spicy red stuff. Who knows? It all tastes good when mixed with the falafel balls.

1773 Columbia Road — and it’s open til 4am on weekends.

spin the bottle April 14th, 2008

spin the bottle

Still a bit in recovery mode so my deepest apology for the belated post. We attended a beautiful wedding in Leonardtown, MD over the weekend. I tried to show off by doing a head-first flip into the dance floor during our “spin the bottle” dance party. Yeah, that didn’t work out so well…

Good times had by all and congrats to Mark and Kristy.

ARTOMATIC! April 11th, 2008

ARTOMATIC

The NoMA BID and Artomatic hosted the “Blank Canvas” Media preview of the new space for Artomotic 2008 yesterday, and I, as an esteemed member of the media, was able to get a sneak peek of the space. Artomatic will be taking up 8 entire floors of the new Capital Plaza building at the corner of 1st St. and M St. NE. From the press release Artomatic is billed as “a creative community that collaborates to produce and present a free arts spectacular.” 2008 will be the 6th installment of Artomatic since it was started back in 1999 and displayed at the historic Manhattan Laundry buildings on Florida Ave NW.

Artomatic has grown steadily from then and has gained significant media and artistic community attention. The event will run from May 9th to June 15th and over 50,000 visitors are expected. Of the 1,000 artist spaces available to register over 600 visual artists, 80 performance artists, and 80 bands have signed up. The growth of Artomatic has this year attracted bands from as far away and NY and Texas. It should be quite a spectacular event, but of course the main reason you should attend is to see my photography exhibit (and then purchase the prints). Also, they are going to have an “interactive” tattoo exhibit if you are in the market to get some ink done.

The “Blank Canvas” event gave me the opportunity to scope out the raw space, appreciate the tremendous views from the 12th floor, and take a look at the cute little model they had of a typical floor plate. The friendly folks from DC On The Fly were at the event to provide refreshments; I had some turkey chili that was spectacular. These are the guys with the funny little green electric vending carts that have begun popping up around the city.

As a start of the “Blank Canvas” event they had a litteral blank canvas available for visitors to do some painting on. Here is one of my masterpieces and here the other.

I am greatly looking forward to this event.

Knockoffs and Old Ladies April 10th, 2008

Handbags

Ahhhhh behold the street cart full of crap for sale : knockoff Gucci handbags, cheap plastic sunglasses, and any three white DC tee-shirts for only $10 bucks. These old ladies cannot escape the allure of a good bargain!

In my opinion, the only things worth buying from the street vendor stands are hot dogs and Gatorades.

Have a Nice Doomsday April 8th, 2008

Nuclear Protests

Besides the obvious flock of tourists in front of the White House on any given day, you’re also going to find this anti-nuclear protester… His other sign states that it’s a 24-hour a day operation that started back in 1981, though I couldn’t find any info about just how many people have been part of the encampment through the years. From the set-up though, it seems that he has everything he needs for hangin’ around 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, including whatever special permit was involved.

Grumpy on the Metro

A Monday morning sentiment I think many people share… wanting to curl up into your shirt on the metro and hide. If only this was appropriate at your desk, during meetings, interviews… anytime you get grumpy really.

momma said “knock you out” April 3rd, 2008

Matt_boxing_rest

This is my best attempt at having a “grrr, aren’t I scary” face. Intimidating, I know.

Unbeknownst to me one of the guys who trains at Knox Boxing and Fitness on 18th Street in Adams Morgan is also a professional photographer. His name is Nick Strocchia and here is a link to his website, be sure to take a look and consider him for all of your future professional photog needs. Nick decided to take a night off of working out to shoot some photos of the Georgetown boxing team during their training session. While not a member of the Georgetown team (Go Terps!), I have been working out with the team for the last 6 months or so. They have a great coach and a dedicated core group that will surely make some ripples in the, albeit small, world of collegiate boxing.

In addition to my “grr, aren’t I scary” face (above), he snapped a couple good shots of my “I’m punching you in the belly” face and my “Now, I’m going to punch you in the face” face. Take a look at the rest of the series (here) for more action from the Georgetown guys.

watch the first step, it is a dooozie April 2nd, 2008

exorcist stairs

Hmmm, where to find a good priest?

I have a buddy who has run 10 laps of these things every week for the last 2 years. He goes fast; I cannot keep up. These so-called “Exorcist Stairs” are seriously intimidating and quite an interesting off-the-beaten-path DC landmark. After blowing your last 5 pay checks while shopping on M St. in Georgetown, a quick visit is a nice (free) way to spend some time.

I get too scared to actually watch the Exorcist all the way through, but from what I understand the scene with the stairs is pretty good.

C-A-P-S Caps Caps Caps! April 2nd, 2008

Alex Ovechkin

I took this photo of Alexander Ovechkin at a Capitals NHL game earlier this season, but I’m posting it now in celebration of their big win last night. The Caps have 2 games left to play in the regular season, and they are now tied for first place in their division. Washington hasn’t had a good ice hockey team for plenty of seasons now, so this is exciting news for anyone in the area who even remotely follows hockey.

April Fools Presidents

So today is the day when you are supposed to play a prank on someone… but this is just a blog, and sadly not a banana peel under your shoe, so here is a funny picture instead. It’s a little grainy because I took it around 6 am in the mist before last years National Marathon got started. These giant-headed Presidents are pretty popular at any sort of DC event, including all the baseball games, so if you live around here you’ve definitely seen them before. It’s pretty funny to watch them run, or scare little kids.
