Perseverance dominates agony. Do you agree?

Perseverance dominates agony. Do you agree?

We’ve posted about watching the airplanes at Gravelly Point previously, and now here is one of Matt’s oldie-but-goodie night shots, taken in October of 2006. I think it’s a little too cold to spend an evening out there now, especially with hands out of pockets taking pictures…

White stuff, OMG! This is the view of the street from my window at work. (Glorious Downtown Silver Spring, Maryland). It’s been snowing steadily all morning. We are supposed to get 2-3 inches today followed by freezing rain overnight. Good thing I brought my Yak Trax thingies to work with me. Though speaking of work, I wish I could sled on out of here and enjoy a snow day like a little kid, hot chocolate and grilled cheese and snow cream, etc…

The side of the Big Wheel Bikes store in Georgetown. I’ve never been inside this particular store, but I do enjoy this abstract bicycle on the wall!
Where is my water?

New Obama graffiti is popping up all over the city, this one on U. Street. I found a photo of the same by Flickr user voteprime. Apparently it’s a poster that is glued to the brick wall, making it easier to duplicate is my guess.
My photo-walkabout today brought me by Dupont Circle where the Arrest Bush protest/demonstration was going on. It was quite a lively affair to say the least. The largest and most popular aspect of the demonstration was “Give Bush the Boot”,which basically consisted of a massive inflatable President Bush and many many many pair of shoes that people took turns throwing. People really seemed to get a kick (get it) out of being able to do this. The other “features” of the event were: a large headed Condi, a giant Constitution that you could sign (just no walking on it with shoes!), and a stage/speaker set up that proclaimed it was the “End of an Error” but it was inactive while I was in the park. Pretty much it was all about the shoes.
Other things I came across around the city today:
-pretty sweet Obama art
-a hot mama 4 obama
-a really really long line at Ben’s Chili Bowl
-entertaining street vendors with lots of Obama gear
-a reenactment of sorts at the African American Civil War Memorial

Another shot of the crowds of people at the We Are One pre-inauguration concert yesterday… The entrance gates to the areas around the reflecting pool were closed at capacity around 2:30 pm, so we had to gather farther back towards the Washington Monument. I’ve read articles today guessing the attendance between 400,000 - 500,000 people.
Here’s the view from the National Mall (between the WWII Memorial and the Washington Monument) where we stood for most of the concert and speeches today. All we could see were thousands of people and the coverage on the many jumbo-tron TVs around the mall.

I figure I’m going to be taking about a bazillion photos in the coming days so I thought I’d do a tri-photo post instead of a stingy single photo post…enjoy!
Lori and I met over at Tryst on Friday night for a few post work drinks. This minivan pulled up on 18th St. and started opening up shop. They had Obama signs, posters, hats, shirts, pins, and American flags all for sale at presumably obscene price, the one thing that they didn’t have, and keep in mind yesterday was the coldest day DC has seen in something like a decade, was customers. Hats off to them for their entrepreneurial spirit but sometimes you just need to bow to mother nature and realize that people are not, 5 days before the actual inauguration, going to stop in the freezing cold and buy patriotic paraphernalia (and don’t you need a permit for that sort of thing anyway?).

We watched the less than successful street vending from our comfortable perch at the window bar in Tryst. Special on the menu for this chilly January evening were three pleasantly warm drinks:
The Vermonter - Irish Whiskey and Irish Cream with hot chocolate topped with whipped cream, the Hot Vanilla Russian - Vanilla Kahlua and Vodka with hot coffee and steamed half n’ half topped with whipped cream, and the Caramel Apple - fresh steemedhot apple cider and caramel with Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. These are all delectable…very very delectable (we made sure to try each one…a couple times). If you happen to be in Adams Morgan I’d whole heartedly recommend stopping in for a pleasant winter warmer. Tried to figure out if the selection of drinks had any thing to do with President - Elect whose, now famous, Shepard Fairey portrait is prominently featured on the menu but could not come up with any particular connection. Anyone more politically in tune think of any relation of these drinks?
Just up the hill at the corner of 18th and Columbia Adams Morgan Mainstreet/Adams Morgan NOW are hosting a series of Republican Elephant pinata bashings. This photo is from the 1st of the bashings that occurred last night at 5:30p. Since then they have hosted 3 more bashings but don’t fret there are still opportunities available for those in need of getting out some pent up political anger. The schedule for the remaining times is as follows:
- Grand Central, Saturday 7p
- Tom Tom, Sunday 9:30p
- El Tamarindo, Tuesday 12 midnight
So go, get angry, shout into the mega phone about how Bush disappointed you in the last 8 years, smash the elephant pinata, subsequently eat some candy, stop by the kiosk and write down your hopes and message for the incoming administration, and generally enjoy yourself while doing so.

Today marks the beginning of what is sure to be a crazy inauguration weekend!! I noticed that traffic into the city last night was already picking up (maybe since many hotels required a 4+ night stay?) and I’m positive tonight will be even worse. Maybe the low temps of 8 degrees F will keep some people inside… Anyways, coming up on Sunday is a free inaugural concert at the Lincoln Memorial, although it’s during the afternoon and presumably on the opposite side of the memorial, not the back side as seen in the photo. Artists that are going to be there include: Bono, Beyonce, Mary J Blige, Bruce, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Usher, Shakira, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, and a few others that I missed from the list. Most importantly, Jennifer Nettles (from Sugarland) will be there!!!! –though I might be the only person in DC excited about her and/or country music at this time. Hopefully her act will not be conflicting with Sunday fun-day football…

This is taken from the south side of the WWII Memorial looking towards the Washington Monument.

We like to bring you the GLAMOROUS (thank you Fergie for my knowing how to spell that word) side of DC whenever possible… so here is the port-a-potty status down on the National Mall : Lined up and ready to go, just like the loooong lines of tourists that will await them in 6 more days. There has been a lot of discussion lately in the news about the bathroom problem… But I dunno, what do you think? Judging from that picture I see way more than enough for 1.5 million possible visitors! Will you be attending the inauguration festivities?

Another photo from the fisheye camera… kinda creepy don’t ya think? Maybe I should have saved this for Halloween next year or something…

Inauguration Day is 8 days away — these street vendors are going to be busy in a week!

This crazy mural is in Adams Morgan on Columbia just past the top of 18th St. It features people playing misc instruments, exploding TV’s, a card game, and lots of other peculiar things. I like it and think it is fun. The best part (which unfortunately can not be seen in this shot) is a tag line that says “people without murals are demuralized people.
Oh and it was taken with my new Lomo Fisheye camera that is a lot of fun. CVS did a wonderful processing job on this roll that gave everything a nice red tint….booo CVS booooo!

Matt is losing his other 2 wisdom teeth today — in an hour or so. eeek!
Hopefully everything goes well. The difference between this time and the last time that he had the other two teeth removed is: 1.) He will be getting knocked out rather than local anesthesia! 2.) The teeth will not be coming home to sit on the mantle again.
Leave him some love in the comments!
OK, I have a serious case of kitty envy. I want one!!!! See Jill’s newest family member, Romeo, of Poughkeepsie, NY, in the most adorable photos ever below… Kittens are the greatest most cutest thing on earth!!! And they purrr and love string! How can anyone not like kittens??!!

I have never seen anyone play chess at these outdoor tables at Marie Reed Park in Adams Morgan. In fact, you rarely ever see anyone at that playground area, but I guess that’s not to say it never happens…
David and I are currently in the middle of our second online chess game. (He won the first one, boo!) The time limit is 3 days to make a move, that makes it easier to allow for the DC - to - Alaska time difference and our schedules. It also makes it much harder for me to remember what I was doing the last time I moved. Or what I should say is that I am making a much slower and more strategic attack!! HA!

What do you make of it?? Comments, please!

In just under 75 days I will be embarking on my third marathon (2nd time doing the National Marathon). The National Marathon (and Half Marathon) are on March 21st in lovely and scenic Washington, DC. I’m a bit nervous as I have been pretty lazy in this chilly weather. Thus far (which is just yesterday and today) it has served as a good motivator and got me to run ~7 miles last night and ~4 miles this morning (in the nasty wintery mix that we are having, yuck). When I ran this in 2007 the course included a completely sadistic hill at around mile 20 that took runners from Rock Creek Park up onto the Calvert Street Bridge. Here is a link to the new course. It looks like the race directors changed the short fast hill to a much longer more mellow climb up Connecticut Ave and placed it much earlier in the race. How very considerate of them.
I’d really like to break my time of 3hrs 49min from 2007 but we shall see how this goes. Wish me luck!

In addition to learning Italian, I set a monthly list of goals for myself in hopes that some of these habits just might catch on if I take them 1 month at a time….

…Annnnd it’s back to the grind. A full work week? ugh. No more decorations and candy canes? double ugh. Now I guess I will need to start looking forward to the craziness of the inauguration!

My mom had been planning a “something-I-can’t-tell-you-yet” Christmas present surprise for a few weeks now, and yesterday we finally found out what it was. We were picked up by car and, after following the directions of the Garmin, we arrived at Arena Stage to see a performance of Next to Normal. The picture above shows the main stage set, which was, besides the songs, truly one of the coolest parts of the show.
I don’t go to see theater shows very much, but every time I do, I say to myself, “You should go see more shows.” Then I also walk around for the next three days pretending and wishing I was good at singing…

Looking down into the abyss I mean metro entrance…. Yikes.

Welcome to the New Year, we hope yours was a happy one! We watched the ball drop last night in Baltimore while celebrating with all of our friends. Sadly, the fireworks were cancelled because of the high winds, but we still managed to ring in the midnight hour with all of the usual antics.
My resolution this year is to work on learning to speak Italian (Lori). I’m not sure how and when I am going to go about this, so if anyone has a suggestion, please let me know. Matt’s resolution is to get involved doing some volunteer work… What’s yours?
