17th and Q Time Series Photo

As a new urban planning student and (less new) photographer I’ve been trying to think of ways to combine the two interests. Much of the analysis I have been doing for class is to look at the trends and changes of a static measuring point over time. Looking at these indicators (poverty level, amount of new investment, population trends, etc.) helps to get an idea of where things might be headed. I wanted to take this concept and put a photographic twist on it.

The image above is my first attempt at what I’d call, for lack of a better term, “time series photography”. It is just a panographic image composed of photos that are taken over an interval of time from the exact same place to show how a place changes throughout the day. This one is composed of four series of photos from noon, 6pm, midnight, and 6am and was taken outside of our apartment at the corner of 17th and Q St.

The idea would be to select some critical corners in the city in fast changing neighborhoods (U St, H St, Anacostia, Southwest, NoMa, etc.) and complete these time series photos on annual or semi annual basis. Doing this would show multiple time scales and could be a visual tracking of how the neighborhoods are growing, developing, and changing. Overtime I’d be able to build up a catalog of images that could help to tell the story of a place.

Thats the idea anyway, still need to work on implementation….

Also, I made “Photo of the Day” on DCist, woohoo! http://dcist.com/2009/11/photo_of_the_day_november_11_2009.php
