cookout! June 4th, 2012

Also over the weekend we had a massive cookout with our neighbors. We all went in together a few weeks ago and purchased a cow (named Bessie) and split up all the delicious, free-range, grass-fed, non-hormonal, organic, etc, etc, etc meat. So on Saturday we threw a bunch of the different steak cuts onto the grill and had a huge feast. Clearly we started off where we all knew what we were doing, because it is pretty tough to mess up a steak on the grill. Up next, we’ll be tackling short ribs, cube steak, brisket, and the rump roast. I’ll probably be doing a little bit of reading here to brush up on my cuts of meat…

Did you really buy a section of a cow? Like from a butcher with all the packages wrapped in white freezer paper? Is it all in your freezer? If so, I hope they didn’t include the tongue.

yep! we did buy a cow — part of it anyways. Her name was Bessie. We split it 4 ways with some of our neighbors, otherwise it never would have all fit in our one freezer. Sooo much meat! It’s vacuum packed in clear plastic. There was only one package tha was questionable as to what part of the cow it was… maybe it was the tongue. Anyways, we volunteered to not keep that part… :)
