Another alley photo for your Wednesday afternoon. It looks like cars haven’t made their way in or out of here in quite some time. Maybe the owner just uses it as a storage area, accessed only from inside. Either way, I’m picturing all sorts of creepy things beyond that door.
I’m not really seeing red today or anything, but that’s the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this photo. I’m actually in a pretty GREAT mood — fall is finally here and the weather is cooled off, the Redskins have a winning record, my fantasy football team is now at 2-2 after a rocky start, pumpkins are popping up everywhere, got a care package in the mail from Jami (with chocolate!), Jill and I had a great yoga class last night and then a dinner of savory pie while watching old Glee episodes… yeah, lots to smile about actually. Happy Tuesday, everyone!
things you find in alleys, part #541

That title, yeah, that’s probably what we should have named this blog, since we post so many pictures of just that. And yet, it just didn’t flow off the tongue as easily as Juxtaexposed. This tiny child’s bed is one of the creepier things we’ve come across on the street, though. Maybe because it doesn’t really look discarded, per se. More like someone just threw out a perfectly good looking kid’s bed for no reason. It’s so clean looking. Hopefully someone just hit a growth spurt and outgrew it and is onto their very first big-kid bed. Either that, or they were just setting up to camp outside for one night. It’s a mystery.
It’s a Thursday, the 31st of the month, and it’s hard to believe March is nearly over. So much for that “out like a lamb” theory — it’s cold and rainy here today. Not really ideal weather for Opening Day at the ballpark. But, as they say in France, C’est la vie…
This photo was taken nearly a year ago now, but I never got around to posting it… I think it makes for an interesting little alleyway vignette, especially with the contrasting colors and the lines and text. Very bold for something so mundane.
In the words of Jayluf, Happy Shamrock Shake month!! Thank goodness for green, frosty, delicious treats. It’s the little things in life that are worth getting excited for, and if seasonal beverages at fast food chains aren’t one of them then I’m not sure what is.
Well, ok… Other little things that are making me happy right now – finding new, good music to download online, knowing Jill is back home from Australia (hard to believe she was gone for 9 months!!), and watching Matt put together bike parts on the floor next to me right now, while Bowser jumps over his back with his blue squeaky bone. Yeah, those are all good things, too.
The house we’re in the process of buying (fingers crossed!) was originally built in 1901, so it’s got lots of quirky history to it. So while this photo is taken in another alleyway in DC, and not at our place-to-be, it reminded me all the same of the layers of history that you find in so many DC rowhomes. We’ve got a lot of decisions to make coming up as we start to move in and think about what we want to update and what will have to wait, like the partially exposed brick wall that runs up the stair case. Should we knock out the rest of the drywall as it goes down the upstairs hallway to the bedrooms? Our house inspector suggested waiting for a bad day at work, then to come home with a crowbar and go to town. Sounds like good messy fun.
As many of you know, lately we’ve been looking at houses for sale and last week we put an offer on one beautiful row house in the Near Northeast/Old City area. Our initial offer was accepted and so we’re moving forward with paperwork, inspections, and great amounts of excitement! And, wow, at the risk of jinxing ourselves, is this first-time homebuyer experience starting off wayyy too easy?
So anyways, I’ve been thinking about paint colors for the living room, gigantic kitchen, 2.5 baths, and 3 bedrooms that are soon to become ours. What do you all think of this yellow door color? Too much?! Maybe just a little… More seriously though, I am digging these wall stencils from Cutting Edge Stencils. I’m definitely thinking we should do something a little bold with at least one of the rooms.
But all that will come with time. Moving in and customizing is going to be a fun task, though overwhelming to think about at the moment. It will definitely be a piece-by-piece project, but that’s part of the reason we chose to buy a place that has room for fixing up as we go but is still totally livable right now.
