Bringing you a little ray of sunshine and hopefully a smile, on what is currently a pretty dreary Monday in DC.

Bringing you a little ray of sunshine and hopefully a smile, on what is currently a pretty dreary Monday in DC.

It was a beautiful Easter weekend in DC, with everything in bloom, warm temperatures, and people grilling outside. Ahhhhhh. Lots of things to be happy and thankful for. I just love this textured photo of tree blossoms with The Cairo apartment building in the background. Seems almost like a watercolor painting at a glance…
Last weekend, on our way to dinner with his parents, Matt found this rose poked into the sidewalk grate, just the way it’s pictured. We passed by it, and then he insisted on borrowing my iPhone camera to go back and take a picture. So here it is.
It was American writer Gertrude Stein who said, “a rose is a rose is a rose.”

We’ve written about it before, Dumbarton Oaks, our favorite garden in the city. We visited this past weekend, again
, with my parents. The rose garden was in full bloom. Good time of year to go!
I found this little painted window box in a not otherwise particularly pleasant alleyway in the Shaw/U St area. I enjoy the homeowner’s “Make Your Own Beauty” approach. These painted flowers added color, character, and life to a usually forgotten space. It is little gems like this that make wandering around the city so enjoyable. So hats off to you Mr. Fake Flowerbox Alley Painter Guy, thanks for beautifying our fair city.

DC forecast: Strong Storms. Rain likely with scattered strong thunderstorms this afternoon. May produce large hail and strong winds Crappy weather got you down? Solution: carry around a giant sunflower with you

Happy Belated Easter! Forgive us for being a little behind in posts as of late. We spent the weekend in Delaware and Maryland — eating multiple Easter dinners, attending church, going on a egg hunt that ended in Rita’s gift certificates(!!), oh and adopting/transplanting my high-school pet, an orange kitty named Moe, back to DC with us. Her named has since been translated to Moesha, and hopefully she will soon be acclimated to the cushy indoor life and maybe catching our new resident mouse for us. It will be a big shock from the fields and barns of glorious Howard County, but I made it, mostly un-traumatized, and she will too. Just need to hope she takes to the litter box now, or at least Matt’s side of the closet.

Feeling the urge to do something “naturey” with our long weekend Lori and I bravely headed into NE DC to visit the Kenilworth Aquatic Park and Gardens. I save bravely because, no way around it, you have to pass right through a fairly decrepit looking housing project to get to the parks gate and deal with about the most confusing traffic detour in the world to get to said project. Once parked and out of the car it was very much worth the minor headache. The Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is set on the Southern/Eastern banks of the Anacostia river across from the much larger National Arboretum. As the name indicates the park consists of a large swamp/marsh area with a boardwalk that reaches out into it and a series of smaller ponds which you can walk around (no fences or rails either, almost fell in trying to take a photo). It was worth the trip to see the giant lilly pads. These things were a good 6′ across. Crazy big.
I’m thinking next spring we will try to come back and visit again.
Hooray for getting birthday flowers from my parents!! I love surprises that are pretty and smell good too. I had to put them in a plastic drink pitcher, usually reserved for Crystal Light, because they are the biggest flowers I’ve ever gotten!!! …they wouldn’t fit in the glass vase that I have without tipping over. Now the apartment is heady with the smell of them– I think it’s the white lily that is so aromatic.
I’ll go ahead and wax reflective here about turning 25 years old, or a quarter of a century as everyone likes to say. I guess its not so bad when it comes with a bouquet of flowers, the day off (not working on your birthday is pretty nice) spent leisurely in DC doing whatever I wanted, with the person I love the most, all followed by an awesome dinner out, which involved a cheese fondue pot!! Everything that makes me happy, all rolled into one day.
We’ll post some photos this week of everything we did this today… Eastern Market crab-cake sandwiches, the Jim Henson exhibit at the Smithsonian International Gallery, artsy movies at the Hirshhorn Museum, dinner at Firefly…. stay tuned.
Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday and/or sang to me!

Two days ago, a cyclist was killed by a dump truck near Dupont Circle. There is now a WABA sponsored ghost bike and memorial at 20th and R St where she was struck.
As a new member of the DC biking community as part of my triathlon training, this incident really shook me. How many times I have been right by that spot?
There is a lot of talk now on the news and in the blogs about cyclists vs. drivers, and traffic rights and rules for both groups, and who was at fault in this situation. The only thing I can think is it’s not fair . She was 22.
I used extra caution yesterday, both on my drive home and my evening bike ride. I think we should all slow down a bit.
