faces, part2 February 10th, 2009

Faces2

Awhile ago I wrote about seeing unintentional faces in everyday places. So this is part two of the posting. This one is a little different because it’s more or less created by the cropping of the photo, but I still see someone looking at me with bright eyes, a long rusty nose, and pursed lips. And in case you were wondering… this was taken in the warm-up room for the University of Maryland boxing team.

snOwMG!! January 27th, 2009

snOw MG

White stuff, OMG! This is the view of the street from my window at work. (Glorious Downtown Silver Spring, Maryland). It’s been snowing steadily all morning. We are supposed to get 2-3 inches today followed by freezing rain overnight. Good thing I brought my Yak Trax thingies to work with me. Though speaking of work, I wish I could sled on out of here and enjoy a snow day like a little kid, hot chocolate and grilled cheese and snow cream, etc…

Gobble Gobble Gobble November 23rd, 2008

Gobbles

This is the first time in 3 years that I haven’t dressed as Gobbles the Turkey for the annual Silver Spring Thanksgiving Parade. So, I’m posting a photo from last year as an effort to relive one of my very favorite costume jobs… There is really nothing better than getting paid to walk around as a mute puppet for 2 hours.

Hopefully whoever was the turkey this year had just as much fun with it — as well as all the other emotions and situations that go along with being a costume character: the massive amounts of sweating into the foam head, the kids that you scare the hell out of and make them cry, the kids that pet you, the adults that pet you, the kids that try to peer inside the breathing hole and see if you are a boy or a girl, the cheesy jokes about getting eaten, the “Where’s the stuffing?! joke, people who try and pull your hand/gloves off, and oh that one parent who threatened me (a non-talking turkey) with legal action and calling the cops because I was walking around in public and her child was afraid of me, and I was causing her mental distress.

Ahhh, I can’t wait for Thanksgiving!

Cole Field House, 6 years later… October 20th, 2008

Cole Field House

While we were out on campus at the University of Maryland this weekend, we poked our heads into a dark Cole Field House just to see it again. It’s been six years (I think) since the Terps last played basketball there, and boy did it seem smaller than I remembered it. Maybe because the lights were out… but in any case, it was cool to sit in those seats again. Look how loved they are!

tailgating really is an art, you know? October 19th, 2008

10_18_08_terpstailgate.jpg

Our thanks to Mr. Zack Vogel (check out those sweet glasses) and his generous parents for putting together a delicious Mexican themed smorgasbord of a tailgate yesterday in preparation for the Terps v. Wake Forest football game.  We were unable to score tickets (thanks Jill) and watch Maryland stomp on Wake Forest in their 26-0 victory from Bryd Stadium.  This was okay though as opted to watch the game from the comforts of Lupos the Thirsty Turtle.  The game was a continuation of Maryland’s rollercoaster season that has had them shutting out ranked foes and getting shut out by teams they should have buried.

Now it is Skins time.

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!  HAIL VICTORY!  BRAVES ON THE WARPATH!  FIGHT FOR OLD DC!

Parking for Crisfield’s September 30th, 2008

Can’t Read

We’ve written about it before, because Crisfield’s in Silver Spring is one of our favorite seafood places. And now here’s a photo of the signage in their parking lot (which they share with a car tire place). I think more things in life should be as witty and concise as this. It’s perfectly fitting for the type of no-nonsense restaurant that it is.

outdoor movies August 19th, 2008

Airplane!

On Sunday night we went to check out the Comcast Outdoor Film Festival at the Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD. The show for the evening was Airplane! and true classic, and I think I forgot how funny that movie is.

The hill setup made for pretty decent viewing, and there were tons of vendors. By that I mean there was Ben and Jerry’s. The guy sitting behind us, who was talking about his love for mixing popcorn and ice-cream (“It’s sweet and salty!”), proceeded to then share some of his popcorn (we had been laughing at him) to mix with our last few bites of ice-cream. Not bad at all!

A Wetsuit and a Selby Bay Mustache August 10th, 2008

Matt in a Wetsuit

If this isn’t reason enough to Donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for Team in Training, then I’m out of ideas! Our friend and coach, Ted, took this shot yesterday morning during our open water swim practice in wetsuits in Selby Bay, in Edgewater, MD. Lots of people came out of the water with murky brown mustaches and jellyfish stings. Luckily, I only had the first condition, which was easy to wash away. I guess it’s only fair to post my wetsuit shot too, so there you go, I’m on the left, mustache only somewhat visible. Following the swim, we completed a 5.5 mile run through the neighborhoods. What a gorgeous day!

“The Awakening” May 21st, 2008

Awakening

I think this is a favorite sculpture of many people in DC, but unfortunately it no longer resides in Haines Point in the district where it had been since 1980. It was moved in February to the location above at the National Harbor in PG County, Maryland. Here are some more shots of his new resting place.

People just couldn’t resist going and sitting in his hand or climbing in his open, angry mouth as he struggles to break free of the ground. At times the Potomac flooded up around the 5 parts of the statue, and though I never saw it in that state, I bet it was super creepy looking like a sea monster.
