take it easy, baby, make it last all night

Yesterday evening we went to see Crosby, Stills, and Nash and Tom Petty at the venue formerly known as Nissan, but now awkwardly named Jiffy Lube Live. It was mostly a crowd of younger people such as ourselves, probably still in diapers during the 70s or even yet to be born, but still with an appreciation for some classics that our parents probably played on the radio during long car rides. Or perhaps, like me, had Petty’s Greatest Hits album get stuck in the CD player in my first car in high school (the same CD player that my older brother “sold” to me for $100 bucks with the car even though it was my parents, ugh) but anyways causing me to forever associate “American Girl” with those awesome first drives around Howard County during the summer when I got my license, windows rolled down, singing at the top of my lungs, and… anyways, you get the picture. So, all-in-all, a great show and a great singalong event on what turned out to be a lovely evening on a hillside in Virginia.

I haven’t posted any music in awhile on here, because, well it’s supposed to be a photo blog. But, this song just came on my iTunes rotation as I’m sitting here working, and it’s been awhile since I’d last heard it. Though Bob Dylan wrote it, I think I first heard either the Garth Brooks or Billy Joel version forever ago when it came out on the Hope Floats soundtrack. Then, Adele recorded her version a few years ago. I think it’s the best one.
This past Wednesday evening, we were on our way home from Christmas party #1 with Matt’s coworkers and decided to stop in and check out Mechanix at Steve’s Bar Room. The music was just getting going when we got in there, and it didn’t disappoint. You come straight off the elevator and right into the mix — the DJ booth is literally in your face, with all the various musicians on top of that. Billed as “classical music, jazz improvization and underground electronic music, the duo’s live ‘musican vs. DJ’ aural hybrid is both organic and original…” we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but for me, anything with live drums is usually worth it. We didn’t stay too long since this was already our second destination of the evening, but it looks like it’s a regular jam for Wednesday evenings? (hard to tell from their website?), but I would definitely check it out again.
A huge pile of old records sitting out on a nice day in Dupont Circle. For sale or for listening? You never know, because these guys also had a huge old vintage looking record player with them, so maybe they just wanted to break out the collection.

Even though I have seen both of these acts perform on numerous occasions, I still get starstruck every single time. There is just something about country music concerts that always gets me. Last night we were lucky enough to enjoy free box seats to the show (just one of Matt’s job perks for having connections in the construction industry!) It was a really long set, and I don’t think anyone left disappointed.
No cameras were allowed for Friday night’s show – Lily Allen at the 9:30 Club – but of course Matt snuck this picture anyways. It had been awhile since we’d been back there, and maybe it was my choice of show/musical taste, but I feel older and older every time I go there. Anyways, the show rocked, I love Lily Allen and her quirky lyrics, and I especially enjoyed her ability to dance around onstage in the tallest sparkly heels I’ve ever seen…. and, I even enjoyed the first band, Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head even though I wasn’t that into their music on myspace, they weren’t too bad live.
On Sundays there is often a drum circle in Meridian Hill Park , so we went to check it out last weekend. We were probably on the late side–it was close to 5:00 in the evening– so by the time we arrived there were just these two guys tapping away. It seemed like the old guy was teaching the younger guy as if it was his first time there. I sat and listened for a little bit while Matt took this shot. It was definitely a good background beat for fall in the park, but we gotta go back later to catch a bigger group of drummers…
