On Sunday evening, after returning from the beach, we finally got around to cleaning up our sad little tree box in front of our house. It had been full of little pieces of trash, leaves, old mulch, out-of-control weeds, and ripped up pieces of soil liner. We stopped at Home Depot and picked up some soil and some flowers, begonias I think, but I’m not good with plant names… And thanks to the two gigantic green potters from Kristy and David, we had a quick little fix to the ugly tree box problem. Matt drilled some small holes in the bottom of the pots for drainage, and we dug out some shallow little holes in the dirt to make the pots sit better. The kids across the street helped with the shoveling part, so we can’t take all the credit! But yeah, we are slowly turning into The Lime Green House. woo hoo! thanks for the pots Kristy! Now we can tell people how to get to our house. Growing up, it was “turn into the driveway with the two white wagon wheels.” Now, we can tell people to “turn when you get to the two neon green pots.”

Just when you thought the blog was gone forever… I finally post another photo! Matt snapped this shot with his cool new Android Retro Camera app, so that’s why it looks all retro-like. It was taken underneath a southwest portion of the Southeast-Southwest Freeway, otherwise known as the massive tangle of roads that cut off the lower portion of DC from the rest of the city. Looks like a pretty good set for a thriller, yes?

On Friday morning, Matt drove me to my dentist appointment to have my wisdom teeth extracted. DO NOT WANT to go… But we did pass this funny little bus stop on New Hampshire Avenue just before the Beltway. I wouldn’t mind rockin’ out in those chairs and waiting for the bus to come.

Anyways, then my teeth were out, and I spent the weekend eating pain killers, soup, pudding, and rainbow sherbet. Not too bad after all… AND I had lots of company to help pass the recovery time.

The rainbow sherbet is the same color as the chairs, yes?

The Whitehurst Freeway rises above K Street in Georgetown, and it carries vehicles along the Potomac River between the Key Bridge at the west end and Rock Creek Parkway/K Street at the east end. Named after H.C. Whitehurst, the director of the District Highway Department at the time of its conception, the bridge was built in the 1940’s and was the District’s very first freeway. Steel shortages at the time delayed its construction and it opened a year behind schedule, in October 1949. The final cost: $3.3 million. Included in the demolition was the house of Francis Scott Key, writer of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Last weekend, on our way to dinner with his parents, Matt found this rose poked into the sidewalk grate, just the way it’s pictured. We passed by it, and then he insisted on borrowing my iPhone camera to go back and take a picture. So here it is.

It was American writer Gertrude Stein who said, “a rose is a rose is a rose.”
