civic duties
May 11th, 2009
I got my first jury duty notice in the mail over the weekend. Is it a little weird that I’m really interested to go see what it’s all about? I know it’s usually a dreaded notice by most people. Hmm, maybe I will change my mind after going…
singin’ the post holiday blues
December 29th, 2008

I am officially singing the post holiday blues. Doing the whole “work” thing just isn’t as nice as relaxing with the family, eating/drinking, and getting/giving gifts. I thought I’d put up this adorable little pup with a bow around his neck to try to bring some (minor) joy to others who are feeling a little blah today. I found him last year around this time keeping guard in front of one of the uber nice homes (mansions?) in Kalorama.
… fortunately New Years is just around the corner, woooohoooo bubbly!

It’s Columbus Day and all, and I’m at work when 95% of DC is still sleeping right now, so I thought I would make great use of my time to write a little history lesson: This is a statue of Isabella I of Castile, and it’s outside the Organization of American States building at 17th and Constitution, NW. Isabella was married to Ferdinand II of Aragon, and Spain was politically unified under Carlos I of Spain, their grandson. Christopher Columbus’s plan to sail west to the Indies was denied by Queen Isabella three times before she finally agreed to his terms. He and his crew departed on August 3rd and arrived in America on October 12. (Wikipedia.org)
All of that sailing and discovering, and still the parking garage is not free today.
I don’t like these floating holidays! Let the parking be free!
…some sculpture for your Monday morning
June 16th, 2008

This is the “Majesty of the Law” sculpture outside the Rayburn House Office Building, which is just south of the US Capitol Building between Independence Ave and C St. SW. According to DC Memorials.com, he’s holding a book of federal laws with the United States seal on the cover, and his sword is meant to represent valor. His counterpart is the female “Spirit of Justice,” and she holds a lamp to symbolize truth and righteousness. The photo was taken with the lensbaby, which is what gives it the blurry effect.
“The Awakening”
May 21st, 2008

I think this is a favorite sculpture of many people in DC, but unfortunately it no longer resides in Haines Point in the district where it had been since 1980. It was moved in February to the location above at the National Harbor in PG County, Maryland. Here are some
more shots of his new resting place.
People just couldn’t resist going and sitting in his hand or climbing in his open, angry mouth as he struggles to break free of the ground. At times the Potomac flooded up around the 5 parts of the statue, and though I never saw it in that state, I bet it was super creepy looking like a sea monster.
Dupont Circle Fountain @ night

I think this photo is just
beautiful. And mysterious. What is crazy-hands on the left motioning about? Why is the guy on the right smiling? We will never know.

Here is Mr. Lincoln’s hand, a closeup shot from the Lincoln Memorial located at the western-most part of the National Mall. The words inscribed above his head: “In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.”
Here’s the full guy.
In a gentle way, you can shake the world. -Gandhi
January 31st, 2008

This double-exposed photo was taken with a Windsor Camera (Diana Clone). It captures a statue of Gandhi and also the branches of a gnarly old tree. The statue of Gandhi is in front of the Indian Embassy, close to Dupont Circle, on a triangle plot of land bordered by 21st St, Q St, and Massachuesetts Avenue in Northwest DC.
