Yesterday I went over to see Jill’s new apartment in Crystal <del datetime="2012-01-26T22:07:11+00:00">Shitty</del> City. As I was getting off the metro, I was bombarded by this guy with a clipboard — you know the ones that are always getting you to donate to some sort of cause. I really can’t stand those people, and let me tell you why. I used to work above a Whole Foods and I pretty much ate there daily for about 6 years, so I’ve seen these people day in, and day out and they’re usually really pushy. The entrances to Whole Foods are like prime-o real estate for people trying to get money for causes. Maybe it is the sort of liberal-minded health food types that they are targeting there, and I’ve no doubt they’re right on with that, but lets not get into stereotypes. I know plenty of conservatives who shop at Whole Foods, too. Everyone loves delcious sushi and a salad bar. Undebatable. But while we’re on it, why do you never see those people outside of Giants??

Anyways, over the course of 6 years, I definitely stopped to talk to many of these people and learn more about their different causes. Save the Whales! support Solar Energy! Donate to Cancer! etc etc! Seriously, many of these are great causes. I am happy that people care about things, and let me clarify, it’s not the signature-collectors that bother me. If you need my signature and can explain why in 3 sentances or less, great, I will likely sign your paper. But what I can’t stand is being hit with fake, perky smiles, pens and clipboards in my face, and stupid ice-breaker questions (as in yesterday “Hello there, excuse me, can you tell me two things that everyone has?!”), when all you want is money. Especially not during my commute or my lunch break. My brain is on hiatus during these few spare moments.

In addition, I know these people are going to talk/make faces about me behind my back later. I can’t imagine that you stand on a street corner all day, trying to be friendly to people, and at the end of the day you feel really great about humanity or general personal kindness (see also: DC is rude). So yeah, I have no doubt that you must be making a srunched-up-sour face at me after I brush you off and pass by. But let me get to my point. I have plenty of causes that I find important, things that have affected my life, or my family directly, that I am happy to support or learn about. These are things that I have read about in my free time, taken an effort to truly learn about, and happiy give either my time or my money to without anyone seeking me out to do so.

So when you come rushing up to me on the street asking for my time and my money, I’m not going to drop everything and suddenly act like I give a hoot about whatever you are quickly pitching to me. I’m certainly not going to pledge money to something I just heard about 2 seconds ago and have had no time to look into. How do I know how legitimate you are? I once talked to a guy who wanted a minimum pledge of $20 to support a Solar Energy campaign. I asked him what percentage of my donation would go directly to the cause. He didn’t know the answer. I asked him if he was getting paid to do what he was doing. He tried the good old diversion tactic, and tried to focus my question back to the cause. As it turns out, I finally got it out of him that he was a paid position. So, did he really care about Solar Energy? Maybe. (hopefully). But he was also making his rent money, and possibly a commission, too? I wish I had asked that. And while I realize that this is certainly not true of all those clipboard people, it sure does make me skeptical.

So, if you were wondering, my answer to yesterdays question, “can you tell me two things that everyone has?” – I answered “A heart and a brain.” The guy liked my answer and told me so. I kinda wish I heard his actual answer after that, but I missed the rest of his speil, because Jill picked up her cell phone at that moment to give me directions to her place, as I had no idea where anything is in Crystal City. So yes, if you’re following along, I had my phone legitimately up to my ear the whole time I was walking by, and he *still* approached me to ask his weird ice-breaker question. I think they must teach you that in Clipboard Training School.

What they should really teach you, though:

1). Don’t try to talk to me when I’m on the phone. Even if I’m faking it. Respect the time it took me to get my phone out of my pocket and make a fake call. If I’m texting, that’s fair game though. I’ve seen people text and get married at the same time, so whatever. LOL! OMG!
2.) Lose the cheesy pick-up lines. If you can’t come up to me, in a normal indoor voice, and ask, “Hey, are you interested in hearing about XYZ…” and act like a human being instead of a desperate person in a loud bar, then I don’t wish to speak to you already. Even if your cause is for the unicorns.
3.) If I say no or act uninterested, just walk away. Do not, under any circumstances, yell things at my back like “OH OK, I guess you DON’T care about CANCER then.” I have had this happen. It makes everyone within a 50 foot radius feel embarrassed and makes you like a toddler. Also do not say, “Have a nice day” unless you mean it sincerely. I can hear that angsty, sarcastic teenager in your voice when you don’t mean it.
4.) Try to not touch me with your clipboard.

Whoa, how did I get on that tangent? I sat down to write about art and newspapers as in the accompanying photo, and then I had to amend the title of this post just now. The point is, I walked by these paintings and newspaper boxes, then Jill and I had dinner and then went to see My Week With Marilyn. It was a great movie, I thought, and hard to even tell it was Michelle Williams the whole time and not Marilyn herself. We did not opt to get the AMC-movie-voucher-swipey-rewards card, even though it was offered multiple times on our way in. I guess we’ll never reap tons of benefits and popcorn at the future date of our next trip to the movie theater… Annnd maybe that what all this is. I’m just tired of gimmicks and pitches, and hence the tangent above. Can’t I just get off the metro like a normal person, go to grocery with my own thoughts, or see a movie without having all these sideshows? Do I have to spend the moments of these normally pleasureable activities wondering if I’m a jerk for not donating to the cause or if I’m a bad, irresonsible person for not caring about saving that future dollar? There’s always something else.

And yes, lady, thank you for thinking of it, we will certainly do the next size popcorn for a dollar more.

On Friday, we took off on our bikes a little after lunchtime and headed northwest towards Leesburg, VA. It was BEE-YOO-tiful out, maybe a little on the windy side, but cold enough to wear a pair of gloves and ear-warmers, two layers, but still not ever really break a sweat while riding OR start to freeze. Perfect! And with all the leaves doing their best autumn colors, it made for a prety backdrop to our ride. We made it a bit past Shirlington, only a few miles into the W & OD Trail , when we pit-stopped at some benches to eat the lunch I packed – turkey sammies and pita chips. Good fuel.

From there we pedaled on at my somewhat slow pace and enjoyed a pretty empty trail for the most part, passing a handful of other runners and bikers. I’ll admit that after about 15 miles or so, I had to stop pretty frequently to stretch out. I was getting horrible cramps in my neck, back, and shoulders that only felt better when I stopped to bend in the opposite direction of the way I sit on my bike. By the time we got to Herndon, about 30 miles in, I was pretty much ready to break my new bike in half and throw a tantrum on the side of the road out of frustration from my neck pains. I may or may not have done one of those two things, I’ll leave it at that. Matt suggested that we find a Holiday Inn and just stay in Herndon. I was pretty ready to do just that, but the thought of staying in a Holiday Inn was majorly disappointing to me. I certainly wasn’t going to make it all the way back to DC that night, so we decided that the best option was to continue the last 13 miles to our intended destination. It was pretty nice watching the sun go down to our west as we rode along, slowly, and yelling WOMP-WOMP-SUCKAS! at all the commuters stuck in Friday traffic as we biked across the overpasses at the Dulles Toll Road. I guess that part was actually earlier in the trip, before my breakdown in Herndon, but I didn’t want to leave it out of the story.

Anyways! By the time we neared Leesburg, it was getting pretty dark and cold, and the only thing that was worth quickly stopping for was a handful of peanuts. As we went on in the dark, we saw lots of little bunnies and critters scampering across the path, illuminated by our bike lights. Matt thought that the pattern of the lights on the ground looked like scary clown faces, his light more so than mine. It was mesmerizing to watch them move along the pavement. It is actual pretty peaceful to ride at night like that in the middle of nowhere. So we were about a mile from our destination, and my legs were totally turning into jelly, when I saw some lights off to our right, which I thought was Leesburg, but Matt informed me that it was actually some sort of small power substation. It was at this moment that I understood how a desert mirage works, when you are looking so hard for something (our destination) that everything starts to look like it. Funny how that works.

At milepost 34, we arrived and turned off to the right to go uphill to the Leesburg Colonial Inn. YAY!! Matt carried our bikes up two sets of stairs to Room 2. It was a funny little colonial-inspired place with a “washbasin” on the nightstand. I’m not sure it had ever been used for that, but I liked it anyways. We took hot showers and immediately felt better and ready to devour some pizza and beer at Fireworks, the place across the street. It sure hit the spot after all that riding. I think it was only about 10:30pm when we crashed for the night. Tired muscles! It was a good sleep. In the morning, over breakfast at the hotel, we strategized about a couple things. First, I admitted that it was a bad idea to up and ride 40+ miles on a new bike that I had only ridden about a collective 20 miles on before, and never more than 5 or so at a time. That was dumb, for one. It may have made more sense to try a shorter distance to check the fit. And yes, we had already tried adjusting the seat up and down, changing positions, etc. Matt thinks that next we will order a little adjustment piece to raise the handlebars a bit and see if that helps. Anyhow, at the end of our strategizing session, it was determined that we would bike 26 miles back to the Dunn Loring Metro, and metro back home from there, and call it a trip until I can get better adjusted and lose the neck pain. Before we departed, we explored a few of the antique shops in town. We hadn’t even opened the door to the first place yet, when Matt must have seen my eyes and declaredquicly, and with definity “The panniers are already full.” – meaning I wasn’t allowed to shop. So of course the thing that we found and loved happened to be an oversized sepia-toned print of a city-scene. This thing had to be about 4′ by 5′ or so. We asked the lady working there if they shipped things, telling her that we came by way of bike. “Oh!!” she said, “You’d take flight if you strapped that thing onto your bike!!” Then she proceeded to tell us that she had once sold a mannequin to a couple that came in on motorcycle. She said they rode away with a third person (the mannequin) strapped right on the back, and that she wishes she’d taken a photo because it was such a hoot. Well, she was a hoot. We got her business card and are contemplating driving back there next weekend to get the print. It was that good of a bargain.

It was a really nice ride back, warmer, sunnier, and less windy. Lots of people out enjoying a Saturday morning on the trail. The mileage somehow felt a little more doable. I was thinking about how nice it is to get away for a quick trip like that, and not pack anything except one change of clothes. I can’t remember the last time I went anywhere without my hair straightener and 4 times the amount of outfits that I actually needed. And that makes me sound high-maintenance, which I don’t really think of myself as being. It was kinda like “all-you-need-is-the-shirt-on-your-back” (and a bag of peanuts) feeling.

We stopped off in Vienna to get lunch. First, we wandered by the bike shop, and stopped in to look around. We talked at length to a lady about recumbent bikes because they had a ton of them sitting out front. She was telling us how much she loved hers after having problems with neck pain herself. It was interested to hear her talk about all the places she’d ridden before — Sugarloaf Mountain, Skyline Drive… She told us that many of the recumbents can actually go as fast as a regular diamond frame bike, though they are a little heavier and require a little more effort on really big hills. She recommended we try the little shop next to them for lunch, and so we did, and we had two little meat and veggie pupusas and they were tasty.

And then we were at the Dunn Loring Metro with our bikes, cutting out the last 14 miles, and my neck thanks me for that. It was a great success of a trip! As soon as I get my bike fitting a little better, I’m ready for the next adventure. It has me wishing for spring weather already, since I feel like there are some cold ones coming up. Where should we bike next??

Yesterday evening we went to see Crosby, Stills, and Nash and Tom Petty at the venue formerly known as Nissan, but now awkwardly named Jiffy Lube Live. It was mostly a crowd of younger people such as ourselves, probably still in diapers during the 70s or even yet to be born, but still with an appreciation for some classics that our parents probably played on the radio during long car rides. Or perhaps, like me, had Petty’s Greatest Hits album get stuck in the CD player in my first car in high school (the same CD player that my older brother “sold” to me for $100 bucks with the car even though it was my parents, ugh) but anyways causing me to forever associate “American Girl” with those awesome first drives around Howard County during the summer when I got my license, windows rolled down, singing at the top of my lungs, and… anyways, you get the picture. So, all-in-all, a great show and a great singalong event on what turned out to be a lovely evening on a hillside in Virginia.
