So I was out on the patio this evening grilling some steaks for Matt to have when he got home from class. And I see two slugs chillin’ on the fence. Not moving, just being slugs. Like this:
Then I flip the steaks, and look over at them again to make sure they aren’t getting any closer to me, because who likes slugs? And next thing I know I have some National Geographic/Planet Earth footage on my hands. Thank you iPhone! Check it out below, though beware it’s not for the faint-of-heart. grossssssssss!!!
This morning was one of those mornings where I really wish I was strapped with more camera fire power than my blackberry camera phone. But alas I was out doing a training bike ride and that is not the most conducive activity to lugging around a DSLR. The waters over the Washington Channel and the lawns of the East Potomac Park Golf Course had a very strange effervescent mist wafting along their surface. Combining this with the soft light of the morning and the reflecting lights from the SW Waterfront in the Channel brought about a very eeire scene.
The photo above I snapped on my way out of Hains Point when I noticed that the Channel was running extremely high, so high that it had flooded the banks along a large portion of the river walk that wraps the island (or is it a peninsula?). These benches are often utilized by older gentlemen getting in a morning fish/read/smoke and enjoying the sunrise. Clearly that was not an option today. Not sure what would be causing the high water levels, maybe a remnant of the weekend deluge.

It’s not every day (or in fact, ever) that I receive reader requests, but in my inbox yesterday:
[Dear Lori] … i want to have a guest picture. i “think” i took a really cool picture of a cloud with my phone. where should i send it to to see if it is worthy of being on juxta?
Since I’m always happy to see cool photos, and cool photos only, from our reader-base, I accepted.
The next email arrived with photo, and accompanying caption/side-story :
i just sent the picture. it is of a fast moving, bright cloud having a
near collision with a slow moving dark one. it was coo-coo. i was sitting
out on my parents deck drinking some natty boh and listening to john mayer
with the real jj (my parents are in france for a couple weeks) when i
looked up and that’s what i saw. it was right after a down pour that i
thought was going to ruin my evening of anti-social drinking. but instead
God came through by stopping the rain on my cooler and putting on a fabulous lightning show.
and that’s that. do you think i’ll make the cut? –JJ @ freethetacos.org
So, the great news from over the weekend is that Matt proposed!! I said “Are you serious??” followed by “YES!” It was our five-year anniversary on Thursday, and I was first surprised by roses arriving at my desk at work. Later that evening, we stopped at my parent’s house for dinner. We were on our way up to New York for a wedding in which Matt was the best man. We finished up eating and Matt wants to go for a walk. Well, I want to go for a quick swim in the pool. So, we go for a walk down the street and into the neighborhood across the way. As we were coming back, it was pretty dark, and Matt says, pointing to the only one with porch lights on, “Is that one your house?” I say “yes….” Then he asks me if I remember what was written on the card that came with the flowers. Next thing I knew he was on his knee in the gravel at the end of my parents driveway. Apparently my mom and dad were sitting outside on the porch watching the whole thing. Awww! So, needless to say, I’m enjoying showing off the beautiful ring that Matt chose, and we are really excited!
